Sabaratnam Arulkumaran graduated from Ceylon in 1972. He joined National University of Singapore as a lecturer in 1982. He was Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1995 to 1997, before becoming Foundation Professor at Derby, University of Nottingham and Non-Executive Director of the Southern Derbyshire NHS Trust.

He was Professor and Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George’s University of London from 2001 to 2013, and President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists from 2007 to 2010.

He served on the executive board of FIGO for 12 years (Treasurer for 6 and Secretary General for 3). He is President of FIGO from 2012.

Professor Sir Arulkumaran is Honorary Fellow of several national postgraduate colleges. He is Editor-In-Chief of Best Practices and Research in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology since1998 and has over 260 indexed publications.

Professor Sir Arulkumaran was appointed Knight Bachelor for his services to medicine in 2009 by Her Majesty the Queen.
